5 Popular Macadamia Cultivars in Vietnam
Vietnam is expanding the cultivation area of macadamia trees nationwide to bring economic benefits to the country as a whole and to farmers in particular. To select suitable macadamia cultivars, farmers can consider the following 5 types:
Macadamia 900
- Tree characteristics: Umbrella-shaped canopy, evenly rounded, large canopy size reaching 5-7 meters, tree height reaching 7-8 meters. Thick and sturdy branching. The leaflets are long with wavy edges, and there are many thorns along the edges. Young leaves are often purplish in color.
- Fruit characteristics: Oval-shaped fruit, large in size, with dark green and slightly rough skin. The apex of the fruit is prominent and off-center compared to the fruit stalk.
- Seed and kernel characteristics: The seeds are oval-shaped, yellowish-brown, and range in size from medium to large. The seed coat is slightly shiny with slight depressions. The kernel is spherical with a pointed tip, and the kernel color is ivory white.
- Advantages: Strong growth, high resistance to pests, diseases, and strong winds.
Macadamia 800
- Tree characteristics: Round canopy, relatively larger in size compared to other cultivars, with a canopy width of 5-7 meters and an average tree height of about 7-8 meters. It has a strong branching ability, but the branches are brittle and weak.
- Fruit characteristics: Large-sized fruit, dark green and smooth skin. The fruit stalk is short but thick.
- Seed and kernel characteristics: Oval-shaped seeds, yellowish-brown, ranging in size from medium to large. The kernel return rate is 3.2g, and the kernel quality is quite good.
- Advantages: Strong growth, high resistance to pests, diseases, and strong winds.
- Suitable soil conditions: Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Lam Dong, Gia Lai, Kon Tum, Hoa Binh, Lai Chau, Lang Son, Lao Cai, Phu Tho, Quang Tri, Son La, Thai Nguyen.

- Fruit characteristics: The fruit is oval-shaped, large in size, with dark green and slightly fuzzy skin.
- Seed and kernel characteristics: The kernel weight is around 3-3.5g, with a kernel ratio of 30-35%, and a first-grade kernel ratio of 95%.
- Advantages: It is resistant to pests and diseases and has excellent growth and adaptability.
- Suitable soil conditions: Central Highlands (Tay Nguyen).
Macadamia cultivar QN1
- Tree characteristics: The tree has a well-balanced canopy and abundant branching. The canopy is straight and wide, measuring 4-5 meters, and can reach a height of 10 meters after 10 years. The leaves are oval-shaped, light green, with pointed tips and serrated edges.
- Fruit characteristics: The fruit has a barrel shape, large in size, with dark green and slightly rough skin. The apex of the fruit is sharp and slightly off-center compared to the fruit stalk.
- Seed and kernel characteristics: The seeds are spherical, medium to large in size. They have brown color, large and flat hilums, shiny seed coat with slight depressions. The kernel is spherical, ivory white, with a medium size of 18-22mm.
- Advantages: It has strong growth, is less susceptible to pests and diseases, has good drought tolerance, and high fruit setting rate.
Macadamia cultivar OWN CHOICE (OC)
- Tree characteristics: The tree has a low canopy, small branches, strong branching ability, and flexible branches.
- Seed and kernel characteristics: The seeds are relatively large, with an average weight of 7.75g, and the kernel weight is 2.7g. The kernel ratio is 37%, with a first-grade kernel ratio of over 95%, and good kernel quality.
- Advantages: It allows for two harvests per year, resulting in higher average annual harvest yield. It has stable harvest output and good macadamia quality.
- Suitable soil conditions: Central Highlands (Tay Nguyen).
